About content management systems

Chantal Foster | November 14 2007

Several questions about content management systems (CMS) came up at the American Advertising Federation conference today in Albuquerque.

New to CMS-land?

Read this first: About web content management

If this is old hat for you, let's talk shop. Which are your favorite CMS's and why? Here are some I've used...

I'm also playing around with Drupal, Expression Engine, and Pligg for a little end-of-summer fun. (oh the joy!)

For small businesses, here's a question that should be considered more often than it is:

  • Should I install a CMS on my server or host it as a monthly service on Wordpress or Typepad?

Lately, I'm leaning toward the latter. Hosting it as a monthly service buys you the following advantages:

  • Your CMS upgrades automatically as the product evolves.
  • New add-ons or widgets are automatically incorporated into upgrades without any action on your part.
  • Traffic peaks will be handled by the CMS company's servers, not yours.

Who wants to be a server admin anyway when already there's tons of work to be done creating content and attracting an audience?
